putting programs back into computer after re-installing windows

$

I had to back up my programs with HP as I had problems with a never stopping windows logo and freezing issues. I backed up the programs onto 27 DVD's as I had no flash drives. I reverted my computer to factory settings and now I can't put my old programs into the computer. I tried the recovery mgr and took all night to download the programs into the computer (altho it would not download any WIM files?). I think the programs are on the computer but I don't know a way to get to the file or to open them or how to get my music, pictures etc into the new setup. any sugestions would be a help.  My Hp computer is no longer under warranty.

Hello;

Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums!

Did you use the HP Backup and Recovery manager to backup your data onto the DVDs?

Did you do a full system backup or did you do the file backup?

If you did the File Backup, that does not backup Programs, but instead, only data files.  And that means, you would have to download and reinstall any applications that are no longer there since the factory reset.

Not charging, dead computer

IMG_1157.JPGLast night I fell asleep with my computer on. It fell off my bed in the middle of the night. I unplugged the charger this morning, but forgot to turn it off, and it died. Now, I can't plug it back in. It won't charge, and it's dead, so I can't see the error. The charger is twisted, but just the kind of "cover" so I don't see the problem. I have art I need to do tonight so please respond fast!

Hi mdklassen,

Thank you for the great explanation and direction. I have an external hard drive (Western Digital, 1 terabyte) that backs up my Seagate hard drive daily. I'll do a full backup to make sure everything is there. Then I guess get a new hard drive and install it.

Are you, then, saying that you believe this is the crux of all of the computer problems I'm having? Even though the slowdown was sudden, literally overnight?

So that's it? We are done?

Thank you.

Kathy

I'm not sure what I did. I do know that the discs show that they have my music files and my picture files. I watched them being copied onto the computer when I used the recovery manager. How do I know if the programs were copied?

I have Right Clicked an email and clicked on Aarchive.  How do I read it or retreive it from Archive?

Were you running Microsoft Outlook when you selected "Archive" ?

That SEATOOLS software is capable of doing much more than "disk-cloning".

It is capable of extensive diagnosis of Seagate disk-drives.

But, if you assume that the Seagate disk-drive now has "very-limited" remaining life, what should you do first:

* clone the disk-drive,

* backup the entire disk-drive (which is unlikely to backup "everything" -- namely your installed programs and your settings), and then do the disk-cloning,

given that you probably can do just ONE of the above two items.

After the disk-cloning, running SEATOOLS will [probably] confirm that the Seagate disk-drive is failing.

But, what is more important to you:

* "proving" that the current disk-drive is bad,

* "recovering" from an imminent disk-drive failure, by "cloning" while you still can

???

I don't think that your problems occurred "overnight".

Unless you ran SPECCY a while ago, and saved the results as "base-line" values, you cannot prove your "overnight" conjecture.

Ouch.  That could definitely damage the computer.

> I unplugged the charger this morning, but forgot to turn it off, and it died.

Do you mean that the battery is fully discharged?

> Now, I can't plug it back in.

Why not? Did dropping it damage the connection-point where the power-adapter meets the laptop?

> It won't charge, and it's dead, so I can't see the error.

Can you post a snapshot (from your smart-phone) of that "twisted" item?

There's nothing that anybody can do, without detailed information about the damage to your computer.

OK, I went to that number addresss and the only options are for setting up a wireless router.  Our computer is not wireless but our other devices are and they all work fine.  Some sites on our computer load resonably quick but others, for example Optumrx, Xfinity seem to come up with a dinosaur picture and the message connection interrupted.  If you wait long enough the site will eventually load (usually).  Seems like sites with a lot of content or graphics are the worst, although Pinterest loads OK.  Is the fact that our computer is hard wired the problem, maybe?  Also before Comcast switched us to this router/modem the one we had before worked fine.  This was supposed to give us much faster connections on everything.  Ha, ipad is pretty much the same and computer is totally frustrating.  What exactly will resetting up the modem/router do for us?  BTW my two options on that site you gave me are:  wireless router setup and wi-fi set up.  Which should I choose:  Thank you so much for your help

ALso the last comcast tech we talked to said to upgrade the operating system that it was not compatible with new xfinity modem.

If you install from that media, Windows XP will be installed. Period.

The Other Person gave the correct information -- if you download Windows 10, for free, and install from it, then it will "call home" and re-activate onto the same computer that previously ran Windows 10.

If your computer will boot from USB or from DVD media -- and that media contains that downloaded Windows 10 -- you will not need to install Windows XP before installing Windows 10.

What computer are you using to access those web-sites? Model-number? Operating system? Which web-sites?  What web-browser?

Try the site:  www.SpeedTest.Net

to measure the speed of your Internet connection.

What values does your Internet Service Provider advertise that you should be getting, for what you pay, monthly?

> If you wait long enough the site will eventually load (usually).

Are you located in some country with limited Internet access speeds?  Cuba? Rural Alaska? That makes a difference.

> Seems like sites with a lot of content or graphics are the worst, although Pinterest loads OK.

That makes sense.

The "text" on most web-pages is maybe 10% of the number of bytes, and the images are 90% of the download.

> Is the fact that our computer is hard wired the problem, maybe?

No, just the opposite.  Wireless connections can be slower.

Again, what are the details about the computers that you are using?

> Also before Comcast switched us to this router/modem the one we had before worked fine.

> This was supposed to give us much faster connections on everything.

With "modern" hardware, it should do so.  Your hardware?

> Ha, iPad is pretty much the same and computer is totally frustrating.

That "Speed Test" web-site, as mentioned above, might not run on the iPad.

> What exactly will resetting up the modem/router do for us?

In my opinion, NOTHING.  The "default" settings are the optimal settings.

> BTW my two options on that site you gave me are:  wireless router setup and wi-fi set up.

> Which should I choose?

Neither -- if it ain't broke, you are not trying hard enough.

The "wireless router setup" configures the router to be compatible with the Internet Service Provider -- e.g., Comcast.

The "WiFi setup" configures the name and password for your in-home wireless network.

> Also the last comcast tech we talked to said to upgrade the operating system that it was not compatible with new xfinity modem.

Sigh.

That advice is just "generic" babbling, not anything useful to your situation.

Further, that advice probably is incorrect, because any modern modem/router is compatible with Linux, Apple IOS, and Windows 7/8/10 and with any web-browser (including Firefox, Safari, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, & Microsoft Edge).

,

Good Day.  A warm welcome to the HP community. I reviewed the case regarding issues with the monitor turning off with a “power button lockout” problem. Superb description and terrific observations made before posting. Kudos to you for that. :)

To assist you with accurate information I would require more information regarding this:

  • Did this happen after a recent power outage or surge?

For now, try these steps:

Perform a hard reset on the monitor by following these steps:

  • Disconnect the monitor’s power cord and the cable from the computer.
  • Please press and hold the power button of the computer for about 20 seconds to discharge static electrical charges.
  • Reconnect the power cord and check if the monitor goes blank or flickers without connecting it to the computer.

Then from the monitor’s user guide: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c03592306 disable the “Power Button Lockout feature” refer to page 10 for steps on how to do it.

This should resolve the issue.

Perform all these steps patiently as it is critical to resolving the issue. Good luck to you. I will keep a watch for your response.

Let me know how it goes and you have a great day!

To simply say thanks, please click the "Thumbs Up" button to give me a Kudos to appreciate my efforts to help. If this helps, please mark this as Accepted Solution as it will help several others with the same issue to get it resolved without hassles.

Take care and have a blessed week ahead. :)

Disconnect the monitor from the AC power. Reconnect it. Do you still have the same symptoms?

Thank you for your suggestions.

Iv done everything that you've advised me to do. I also stopped epic games launcher (fortnite) from booting up in the background when the pc starts.
I must admit the speed is somewhat better but not much at all.

Will doing a full system reset help or is it too early to do this since I only bought the computer in September?

Are there any more suggestions on converting from a HDD to and SSD on this model? Is it possible and if so how?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks a lot for your goodwill.

About an hour and half tell call with HP tech (Dutch)

A satisfying solution was found in cooperation with HP tech.

However, about manuals I have new question.

Thanks again.
