Re: Issue reinstalling Windows 8

Thanks for the reply. Why would I have to buy a factory or retail install disc when I made one with the MS mediacreationtool executable? I used the MS tool to make a 8.1 install disc. Do you know what I mean? And why use RUFUS when the MS tool already makes a DVD or USB bootable? Or am I wrong in saying that? This tool...

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/create-reset-refresh-media

The Product number of this desktop is H3Z76AA#ABA

Hmm a Windows 8.1 install disc will not work with a Windows 8 OEM HP key? If that is the case are there any places I can download a Windows 8 iso? Sort of strange if true... why would a key allow going from 8 to 8.1, but not right out of the gate to 8.1?

I went to 'RECOVERY MANAGER', which gave me an option to save stuff. It had 5 check boxes, wih things like "pictures', documents', tv shows' etc.. It said to check off the boxes that you wanted to save. (Actually, they were all checked already, so to uncheck anything you didn't want to save would be more accurate.)

It took about 10 minutes, then told me that what I wanted to save would be 75.2 gb.

It then instructed me to put in the first dvd. It took about 5-7 minutes per dvd to complete, then it said to put in the next one.

All told, 16 dvd's were used.

When the factory image restore was done, I inserted the first dvd and expected it to put the info back on the hard drive in some fashion or another, but it just sat there, didn't do anything.

So I have all my pictures, docs etc on this 75 gb's made up of 16 dvd's, and I have no idea how to get that information back onto the computer.

Other than pics and docs, I'm not even sure what it saved, hopefully my malwarebytes premium  etc.

I assume there is something i am not doing to get these back onto my computer, i just don't have a clue as to what that is.

Hi:

You need these drivers...

Install this one first and restart the PC...

This package provides the original driver for the Intel Chipset Family SMBus Controller solutions in supported models that are running a supported operating system.

File name: sp57417.exe

This package provides the original driver for the Intel Management Engine Interface solutions in supported models that are running a supported operating system.

File name: sp57372.exe

Thanks for the lightning quick response Paul.

sp57417 installed without a hitch

sp57372 said it failed because I lacked the minimum requirements.

But upon checking the Device manage all devices appear to be installed correctly without any ! flags, even when looking under hidden devices, so I think I'm OK, unless you tell me otherwise.

You're very welcome.

If the smbus and pci simple comms controllers are no longer identified as such, the drivers installed just fine.

The MS tool creates Retail installation media; the version preinstalled on your PC was HP OEM -- they are not the same.

You said you had an ISO; nowhere did I see in your post that you used the MS tool that also allows you to create install media using a USB stick. So, I told you how you can do that using RUFUS.

Some folks have also claimed that the Win8.1 media made from the MS tool will accept Win8 product keys for activation, not just Win8.1 keys.  I have found this to be true because I did a clean-install using media made from that tool and used my existing Win8 product key to activate it.

There have been claims that the version made from the MS Win8.1 tool CAN accept OEM product keys, but those claims have also been disputed.

Don't know of anywhere that you can download a Win8 ISO -- and even then, that would be subject to the same limitations as the Win8.1 ISO -- it might not accept an HP OEM product key for activation.

Good Luck

Cannot boot from external usb hdd

At work we've been using HP desktops for a while now and the latest lease for the computer labs and classrooms is the HP 800 G2 all-in-one.

I have Ubuntu installed to a USB3 external HDD and run win win10 in a virtualbox image within it for the software that won't run on linux.

My problem is the new lease PCs won't see my USB HDD in the bios boot menu.

* USb storage boot is enabled

** legacy boot enable - secure boot disable (not desirable as not pxe boot available) and legacy boot disable - secure boot enable bot have the same result of not detecting my external HDD

*** My USB HDD itself has no problems and I am using the NTFS partition now

Hi ,

Welcome to the HP Support Forums! It is a great place to find the help you need, from other users, HP experts and other support personnel. I understand that your computer is not starting properly and that there is a beeping sound. I am happy to assist with this.

Please post the full product number for your computer. See the following, if you need help with that information. How Do I Find My Model Number or Product Number?

I recommend that you go through this document: HP PCs - Computer Does Not Start (Windows 7) It is very comprehensive. You just need to read through it carefully and follow the symptoms that your system is showing. It will either resolve the problem or point to the cause or advise contacting phone support depending on what occurs.

Please let me know how that works for you, and if it does resolve your issue, please mark this post as a solution. Kudos would also be appreciated.

Hi

Try 7zip.exe

http://www.7-zip.org/

Supported formats:

  • Packing / unpacking: 7z, XZ, BZIP2, GZIP, TAR, ZIP and WIM
  • Unpacking only: AR, ARJ, CAB, CHM, CPIO, CramFS, DMG, EXT, FAT, GPT, HFS, IHEX, ISO, LZH, LZMA, MBR, MSI, NSIS, NTFS, QCOW2, RAR, RPM, SquashFS, UDF, UEFI, VDI, VHD, VMDK, WIM, XAR and Z.

Your difficulty is that the WIM file may be spread over several disks, but hopefully not.

So perhaps try and copy all the wim files into 1 Folder and work from there.

###################################################################################

WIM stands for Windows Imaging Format. WIM files are very similar to other disk image formats, but the format is file-based and not sector-based like most disk image formats. It was introduced in Windows Vista by Microsoft to help deploy Windows Vista and subsequent versions of Windows operating system family. An WIM file may includes several images. With PowerISO, you can open an WIM file, and extract files from the WIM file.

  • Run PowerISO.

  • Click the "Open" button on toolbar or choose "File > Open" menu to Open WIM file.

  • If there are more than one image in the WIM file, PowerISO will show a dialog prompt you to select an image to open.

  • Click the "Extract" button on toolbar to open "Extract WIM file" dialog.

  • Choose the destination directory for extraction.

  • If you want to extract all files, you should select "All files" option.

  • Click the "OK" button to start extracting. If you want to extract another image in the WIM file, you need open the WIM file again, and select the image desired.

Hi

####

then

recovery manager   (third column says 'application')

then

recovery manager  (third column says 'configuration settings')

###################################################

A screen shot of that section would indicate if it was an .exe file that would use the config file.

So ideally you want the original HP Recovery Manager and CyberLink software installed, these would be installed if you create an original factory fresh install, which you said you did in the OP I believe.

Haggis Cat     gave this answer earlier

Re: cyberlink recovery manager

The Cyberlink recovery manager was designed to work with the HP recovery partition and the factory installed Windows 7 HP version OS. The recovery manager will not work with a retail install of W7.

Here is a better solution, go to the control panel and find "Backup and Restore". In the left column find "Create a system image" and "Create a system repair disc". These two applications work together to restore you computer at the time of creation. You can also use your W7 installation DVD as a system repair disc.

Unlike the HP recovery disc's, you can make as many sets as you like.
