Re: windows 11 desktop slow starting, cannot start monitor or wake it up from sleep

Hi @emma22

Welcome back.

Wow, HP Hardware Diagnostics indicates both the Intel Optane drive and the HDD has failed. Very unusual.

You might be able to recover data from the 1 TB HDD by connecting this drive to a different PC as a data drive. Data recovery could be possible if you can mount this drive on a different PC.

It looks like your PC can use the HP Cloud Recovery option to reinstall the W10 HP factory image. I don't know if your PC can do W11 since it shipped from the factory with W10.

You may have to replace both drives if you want to stay with the Intel Optane cache drive and use the HP Cloud Recovery option.

You could also just do a 1 TB M.2 NVME SSD and get rid of Intel Optane. This would require changing a  BIOS setting from RAID to AHCI. Now you can do a clean W11 install if you are interested.

Your PC has the OEM product key in the BIOS. The new W11 install will activate using the product key stored in the BIOS.

Your decision since you may lose some HP specific software if you do a clean W11 installation.

Regards

If it is a total failure as once it is up and running it works fine, wouldn't it not work at all if the hard drive had failed.? All the other tests I ran passed just fine. Prior to this I was getting a message saying the graphics dimmer had been turned off but now that message has stopped to be replaced by this problem.

Hi @emma22

Hard drives can abruptly fail or slowly fail over time. So a failing system drive may cause various intermittent Window's errors as things get worse.

Your PC seems to be in the early stages of disk failure if you can still run Windows but see anomalous operating system behavior:

Graphics dimmer errors, the PC has problems waking from sleep, or you sometimes have trouble running Windows would suggest system drive problems or memory problems.

HP's diagnostics tests are detecting problems with both drives, which is very unusual.

Did you run HP Diagnostic's extensive: system and component tests?

You should back up data ASAP to external media if you don't routinely back up data.

Download and run Crystal Disk Info (Zip version) to get a second opinion on drive health. Download Crystal Disk Mark, also at the previous link,  to check drive performance.

The system has detected that a cooling fan is not operating correctly

Thanks for the info, I only ran the fast test but I will run the extensive test later today and hopefully everything checks out but yes I will back up my grandkids photo's,  not really concerned about losing any other data. I have only used this desktop a couple of hours a week since I got it, my tablet does most of my day to day.

I ran into a similar problem a while back on an older HP Media Center PC and after confirming that the case fan WAS working, I went into the BIOS and disabled the notification message -- and the PC worked fine after that.

So, the first thing to do is confirm whether or not the fan is actually running.

With a desktop, you can open the case and SEE if the fan is actually spinning.

If it is spinning, then you need to look in the BIOS settings to see if there is an option to turn off that message, as this is indicating that a fan sensor has failed but the fan is working OK.

If it is not spinning, then you need to replace it -- which is a simple and cheap process as desktop fans don't cost much and are usually mounted with four screws.

If you can, the next time it does this, write down SOME of the message and post that here.  That will give us some information about what MIGHT be the problem.

HP Elite e9240f RAID operation

Hello everyone.

Not been here for a very long time!.

I have installed an SSD, replacing the HDD in my old desktop with 'RAID'. The OS works but is very slow, I installed "Crystal Disk Info" and I am told SSD: "Not Found". Crystal Disk Mark 8 returns exceeding slow speed. I have tried to select IDE from the menu in BIOS instead of RAID and the computer will not boot and takes me to Repair.

In the BIOS I also see the CD drive as the first boot option with the SSD in second place. The computer boots with these setting. I have tried to select the SSD as first boot option, but that does not work.

Not sure what I am missing or what plan to proceed with. Do I need to install the Win PE boot option somehow, and how?

I'm a little outside my comfort zone. The desktop has preformed flawlessly for many years and only use it to record TV.

Thanks in anticipation of a response

Stu

The BEST way to replace an HDD with an SDD is to CLONE the first to the second.  This takes only a short time and when you then swap drives,  the PC will restart without issue.

If you installed Windows fresh on the SSD, then you will run into serious issues.

My computer wont start

Hello WAWood.

Thank you for a speedy reply. I did clone the HDD to the SSD using Macrium Reflect. I do not have a problem with starting, only a very slow SSD operation, and 'Crystal Disk Info' not even finding the drive. Also there was only one HDD when I purchased the desktop, so not sure why RAID was even part of the software for this Elite?

Thanks for your help

Stu

Hi @emma22

My pleasure.

Also try Crystal Disk software to confirm if both drives are failing.

Let the Forum know how it goes.

HP Envy x360 15-eu not turning on, but charging light is on

Was working fine yesterday, and I didn't notice anything bad happen to it. I tried unplugging everything, holding the power for 20s, and charging and powering again but that didn't work. The Laptop does still charge, so it isn't broken, but neither the keyboard nor the screen turn on. Any possible solutions?

I don't know why the RAID option either.  I had an old MediaCenter HP desktop and it was installed in RAID, as well.  I could not find any way to change that.  Yeah, and using MR is the best approach for this -- and the one I always use.

Ive installed a software and map a network drive and also logged in Outlook, once the PC went to sleep few things ive installed are gone. Same thing happened when i changed the power cable of the PC, which required me to restart. The only solution i had was to set the Sleep Mode to "Never". any other solution to this?

I have my Pavilion with original 16gb of ram 8x8gb (3200mhz clockspeed)

I have now bought 32gb of ram 16x16gb with initial clockspeed 3200mhz.

They are stuck in 2166mhz speed.

I cant find anything in bios to change clockspeed or (X.M.P) i have the latest bios newly flashed.
