DEAD machine. HP refuses to help

Touchsmart IQ506 (32 bit Vista, ugh!)

I wiped the HD, not realizing that HP shipped it with a system restore partition AND WITHOUT recovery disks.  Not a big deal, I had upgraded it anyway previously and would prefer to leapfrog Vista altogether on the rebuild.  I have valid licenses for a couple of iterations of Windows floating around, so no big deal that HP never included a Vista disk.

Wrong.

This box wont take any Windows load.  Is the BIOS expecting a particular HD partition configuration or set of drivers in order for it to play nice?

HP won't tell me one way or the other.   All they'll say is "this computer is no longer under warranty".  No kidding!  Windows Vista?  You bet it's no longer under warranty.  I don't want HP to fix it -- I just want to know why I am unable to fix it myself.  What's the secret setting/partition configuration I need to apply to be able to load an OS on this beast?
