Computer will not hold settings for dual monitors

I have a HP Pavilion Desktop Model e9260F, 8GB ram, Windows 7 Home premium Service Pack 1; 64 bit OS.

I had two monitors connected to the computer - 1 A Sony Triniton designed for use with Photos with a calibration tool. This was connected using a VGA cable and was the secondary monitor. The main monitor was a LG Flatron IPS 235 23 inch monitor connected with a DVI cable. I was always able to bring both monitors up and never had a problem with both coming up and always holding their settings.  I ditched the Sony as it was 10 years old and fading.

I connected a LG Flatron 2486L monitor the computer in its place. Initially I set it up so that it was the secondary monitor and the IPS 235 was the primary.  Almost every time the computer and or screen went into sleep mode it would lose the settings and the 2486 would go into power saving mode.  The only way I could get it back was to go the control panel and select "connect to an external monitor" and detect the additional monitor and click OK. However the setting would soon be lost.

I called LG and the only answer they could give me was to switch the monitors around so the 2486 monitor on the VGA cable was the main and the 235 was the secondary.  This seemed to work initially but after a one or two times with the Monitors and/or computer going to sleep the settings were lost and I have to reconnect to an exteranl monitor.  This is extremely frustarting and I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions as to how I might fix this problem permanently.
