MISSING WIN 8 PRODUCT KEY AFTER INSTALLING NEW MB -VERY SAD HP SUPPORT STORY!

I have a new HP Pavilion desktop that is still under warranty.  The screen became garbled, HP tech support  diagnosed a bad mother board.  The MB was replaced; it did not solve the problem.  Next the video card was replaced and the BIOS upgraded; that mostly fixed the screen issue but did not operate normally.  Next the OS was "restored" which resulted in reinstalling Win 8.  The current status is thatpc works normally except that Win 8 isn't activated.   The system says that the "current product key didn't work".  All of the above steps (which have taken place over 18 days!) were done with the step by step instructions of HP tech support by phone.  Now, HP tech support tells us to perform another system restore.  It did not work before and repeating that costly step is unlikely to work any differently.  I do not want to have to reinstall all the applications, many hours of work.  HP tech support believes that performing a recovery will produce a good product key.  Perhaps it should, but it did not in this case.  Do I have any options other than buying a new Win 8 activation code from HP?
