Hi 66Merc,
Certutil.exe is a core component of the Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server 2003 Administration Tools Pack, thereby making it a core file of Windows. The certutil.exe process is a command line utility designed to manage a Windows CA. As a component of the Windows Server 2003, the program file certutil.exe can be used to publish certificates to the Active Directory. The location of the file certutil.exe is on C:/windows/system32/certutil.exe.
So I am baffled as to why this is running on your system. This process should not be running on your PC.
Check Win 8 Task Manager startup to see if you can kill this process if it is a startup item. It is unnecessary.
Download Autoruns here and kill the process. This program (Autoruns) can cause system boot failure if used incorrectly , so be careful. Conversley, it is also a very effective tool for controlling every process running on your PC. I use it and swear by it!
McAfee is not a total resource hog. I am using McAfee LiveSafe (current version) and have no issues. Also use Malwarebytes and Hitman Pro for second opinions. Please see AV-TEST.org test results for this Anti-Virus program. You will find McAfee within the list of Anti-Virus solutions tested.
Try running Windows Defender Offline ( A Microsoft product). Instruction can be found here. I recommend using the USB option as you can update to current malware definitions prior to each successive use.
You can also refer to this site for instructions on using Kaspersky's offline Anti-Virus solution.
Dokie got me, prepare offline A-V rescue disks on a CLEAN PC.
