Do you know the full model number of your Gateway M? Notebook or Desktop?
Laptop. Gateway M-1629 3409925R. 32 bit
Do you know what audio chip it has?
No, I'm not really sure how to determine that. Gateway lists a
Sigmatel Wndows Vista 32-bit/64-bit Audio Driver if that's what you mean. But at this moment I have nothing - the speaker icon in the system tray has a red X next to it, and hovering the mouse over it yields the message 'No speakers or headphones are plugged in'
I might be able to help if you can provide that info and give me the hardware ID for the sound chip.
It is a little different than with XP. A couple extra steps.
Click on the audio device needing drivers in the device manager.
Then click on the Details tab.
Now you see a Property drop down list.
It will be defaulted to device description.
Drop down on that and select the second item on the list (Hardware ID's)
Post the top string of characters you see in the window.
