This post is a bit old, but seeing as how it was never answered i think i will.
first off let me say you can and there is a safe/easy way to do it.
click start.
click on your user profile folder button (first folder normally has your name / username of choice.
next you should see a big list of folders and "desktop" should be one of them.
right click the desktop folder and go to properties.
next is to go to the Locations tab.
In this tab you can input your own file location or you can use the "Find Target" which allows you to select the target by going through your folders using the windows explorer.
after you have found the folder you wish to use hit the "Move" button.
This will create a pop-up that will ask you if you wish to move all the current desktop items to the new folder. In most cases you will want to hit yes.
and your done.
