Windows 8 change language

I live in Brazil but unfortunately I have been unable to come to terms with understanding the language, Portuguese. Unfortunately the population are very insular and believe that their language is the only one needed. Very few people here speak English.

This problem magnifies whenever I buy an electronic product. Almost across the board the support centre for the product, be it LG, Samsung or HP is only presented in Portuguese. If the product was made under licence in Brazil it will have a unique code which will not be recognised by, eg the USA. Whereas countries such as the USA and a lot of European countries have language options, here in Brazil it is ONLY Portuguese. Combined with the general observation that sales assistants usually have very little knowledge of the products they sell it is easy to find that what you were told you were buying is not correct. All very frustrating.

I recently purchased an HP Pavilion Desktop computer with windows 8. The attendant told me that I could change the language to English. I asked him to demonstrate that procedure in the shop but he said that was not possible, but assure me it could be done.

I have attempted to configure the language to English but I get a message saying "Not possible for this edition of windows 8". The only language on the recommended list is Portuguese.

I have contacted the place of purchase who continue to assure me that the language can be changed but they are unable to explain how. The edition stated is Windows 8 Single Language. (Single Language) is written in English which no one here would be able to read.

Can the language be changed, and if so how, or do I have to pay someone to change the operating system? Any help grately appreciated.

PS. My level of computer skills is very basic.
