I have a Compaq Business PC, dx2250 Microtower that came with XP Pro, Service Packs 1 and 2. The hard drive is going, so a new drive was added and plugged in where the original drive was. I have 7 recovery discs, which I successfully loaded, and saw a note "recovery is complete." The Windows welcome screen came up, as well as the desktop.
However, at this point the HP Backup and Recovery Manager window popped up and said the computer would be restarted in a few seconds. It restarted and a new window came up, called HP Backup and Recovery Manager; Update Recovery Partition. Below this, reads "Preparing the hard drive for the Recovery Partition Update. Please wait ..."
There ae "back," "next," and "cancel" buttons, but they are grayed out and can't be selected.
I've reloaded 3 times now, and still get this screen. It may hang for an hour or two like this, and then it will repeat the process continuously (restarting and then I get the same screen with grayed out buttons). At one point I let it go for 6-7 hours with no change.
I should note that I backed up my PC to an external drive, so I am loading only the recovery disks with the original HP software with the XP Pro operating system.
What's happening here and how do I get past this?
I also have two other discs that I was never prompted to insert, and I can't find info on what they are for. They are "Supplemental Software; HP Backup and REcovery" and "Restore Plus! for HP Compaq dx2250 Microtower." These were burned as part of the 7 disk recovery disc creation when I got the PC in 2008.
