Hmmm, you're not having much luck, so I'll tell you my solution for what it's worth. Namely, get a new operating system. You know that XP is dying and it will be unsafe to be on the internet soon. What I've done with several XP and win7 PCs is convert them to Linux, mostly Mint. At work I use LibreOffice to collaborate with everyone else who run windows and Microsoft Office. I do engineering work, graphic art and even edit movies. It's pretty simple to do, just download it to a CD or flash drive, and try it out to make sure everything works, then install in about 15 minutes. If you have some windows app you absolutely have to use, see if it will run on the Wine compatibility app within Linux; most will. This solution is great for older PCs ; you won't worry about malware and you'll run on less memory. If you like the XP look, try Zorin. Otherwise, I like Mint. Ubuntu takes some getting used to but seems more efficient after you do, and pretty too. Try a couple, the price is the same.
I'm writing this on my HP G62 laptop with Mint 15. It dual boots windows 7 just in case, but I haven't used that in over a year.
